Rick Ely, the founder and president of Compass Marine Inc., has been working specifically in marine industry finding ideal positions for mariners for over twenty (20) years. I am originally from Tuscaloosa, Alabama and grew up dreaming of life on the water. I planned on becoming a marine biologist, and living my life sailing the Seven Seas. I took several detours from that original plan, but finally got my shot when I married the daughter of a shrimp boat Captain in Bayou La Batre, AL. I became a deckhand at age 35, and the fun started. After 3 years working with my father in law, I had enough sea time to study for my Captain’s license. In 2007 I got my first issue, and Compass Marine helped me secure my first job in the oil field. In seven years I ran on 8 different vessels ranging from 110-150’. I ran production, construction, dive ops, survey, and inspection jobs. I worked exclusively in the GOM, and navigated Ports from Aransas Pass, TX to Mobile, AL.

Because I spent several years of my life at sea, away from my family, I appreciate the sacrifices one has to make to earn a living as a mariner. I always conduct myself in a professional manner that emphasizes the needs of the seaman I place. We take pride in finding the right opportunities for the applicants we present. I want to secure employment with companies that will not only provide income, but also lead to advancement of your license and skills. I make myself available seven days a week, and I will always make time for you!

I am responsible for the day to day bookkeeping for the office and payroll for each client that is placed for employment by our recruiting staff. Life events such as changing jobs can be stressful, and I look forward to assisting you in your endeavors to secure a future for you. I recently joined Compass Marine after working in the auto collision repair industry for twelve years. I knew that I wanted to work in an office from a very young age. I love numbers. I love people. The combination of my two loves gives me the opportunity to assist you with questions or concerns that you may have during this life event. Moving into the maritime industry seemed like a natural choice as I have been around water my entire life. My childhood was spent around the Mississippi River, Tennessee River and Kentucky Lake. Upon my marriage to a Coast Guardsman, I moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia and fell in love with the Chesapeake Bay area. After spending twelve years in the Tidewater/Chesapeake Bay area, I came to an area called Mobile and instantly knew this was my home for life. My heart was filled with same feeling after meeting Rick and Jocelyn Ely; my home for life. We enjoy what we do and we look forward to working with you.
